About
Welcome!
The Spot is an Alberta-based business. This is important to highlight because each province or state's public education system is governed independently, and this will impact the relevance of some of the tips and teachings that you find on this site.
However, great teaching and learning is also universal. So, even though this blog is being written by an educator from Alberta, Canada, the hope is that you will find relevant, evidence-based information no matter where in the world you happen to be!

ABOUT ME
My name is Dakota, I'm so glad to meet you!
Currently, I'm in between two different worlds - I was an elementary teacher, and now I'm studying to become a Speech- Language Pathologist. I loved the world of education, and now I'm getting the chance to fall in love with the allied health professions.
When I was an elementary teacher, I had so many different roles. I was the general education Grade 2 teacher, and the music teacher, and also the literacy and numeracy intervention teacher (this 'many hats scenario' will be a familiar story for many of my teacher friends). I also had the opportunity to be my school's Diverse Learning teacher, which meant that I managed our school's IPP caseload by coordinating services, meetings, and interventions.
Now I'm an SLP-to-be, and I get to dig deeper into all of the topics that absolutely light me up. Communication access advocacy, literacy, and pediatric speech and language intervention are all competing for top spot, I don't know if I'll ever be able to choose a favourite!
I love to read (this year, my goal is 1 book per week).
I love to be outside with my dog (her name is Roadie).
Most of all, I love spending time with my friends and family. I'm very blessed to belong to a community of learners that includes teachers, EAs, parents, and students.
I've learned from so many different people, and I hope that you will find this space to be a similar place for learning and growing together.
When we learn together, we get better at helping kids learn. If you agree, then...
You're in the right spot!
